Drunk Driving Can Ruin More Than Just Your Life
Drunk driving may sound like something you can manage, but the dangers involved are plenty. It takes a split second to cause an accident, the guilt and repercussions of which can last a lifetime.
The holiday season is usually filled with joy, beautiful memories and peace. But, there is one danger lurking in the shadows that can spring out at any time. Drinking is often considered a natural part of revelry of any sort. While most people are smart about their drinking and always have a designated sober driver, there are times when one may feel invincible and decide to drive after a few drinks. All it takes is one wrong move to snuff out a life, cause grievous injury and mar all good memories of the festive season.
Drinking under the influence of alcohol is a punishable offence and can land you behind bars. It has been proven beyond doubt, that not only motor faculties but spatial judgment and depth perceptions are impaired when under the influence of alcohol. Driving, therefore, is the most dangerous activity after a party. Bear in mind a few details before a Christmas or New Year event:
- Designate a non-drinking person as a driver before any party or celebration begins.
- Book a cab in advance if you have no one to designate as a driver.
- Walk home or ask a friend to help you get home. You can collect your vehicle when you are sober the next day.
- Take custody of your friend’s car keys if he/she is not fit to drive. Do not let him/her drink and drive.
- If you are the host of the party and alcohol is being served, remind your guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver. Offer alcohol-free beverages as well.
- Ensure that all your guests leave with a sober driver.
- Buckle up every time you leave a party. It is your best defense against a drunk driver.
One might be confident that one can get home safely after a night of fun and drinks, but please do remember that you are not only endangering your own life but the lives of innocent bystanders and drivers of other vehicles. Irresponsible behavior can ruin not just a happy occasion but lives as well.
