How to Keep Your Make-Up from Melting this Summer

It’s getting hot in here…but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look hot as well! We’ve put together some fantastic tips with our only ambition to keep you looking as fresh as a daisy this summer.

All about the base

It’s all about the primer and base ladies and gentlemen, and whoever else we have left out! Follow your usual face cleansing routine and then put on a good primer before you start your make-up. We highly recommend the primers from beauty biggies MAC, Giorgio Armani and Benefit. But since we don’t have to keep up with the Kardashians we can also suggest using calamine lotion as a primer. Always moisturize lightly before the primer and then apply your foundation or BB cream. Make sure your base has an SPF of at least 25.

Eyes wide shut

Start with your eyes next. Use a smudge-proof pencil liner from a good brand like The Body Shop or Chambor – both are fantastic companies that do not test on animals. For everyday use, we would recommend only using the black or dark brown pencil on your eyelid (tightlining) and avoid your waterline (inner eye) as it tends to smudge in the summer. For an evening out, keep the make-up simple and use a cream shadow with a slight shimmer and then lashings of your favorite mascara.

Go lightly

When it comes to summer make-up it is imperative to use a very light hand. Bollywood make-up maestro Mickey Contractor gives us a great tip about how body heat can cause your make-up to look darker 20 minutes or so after application. So even if you feel like you’ve applied your cheek highlighter very lightly, wait and check your face after half an hour. Chances are that it is much darker than expected.

Rose in bloom

The sun’s harsh rays and the excessive humidity will contribute to a natural flush in your face even if you avoid going outdoors. So, unless absolutely necessary we suggest you avoid the blush during the day. Use a bronzer to lightly contour your cheekbones, temple and jaw-line and set it all with a powder.

Blot away

Always carry some dry tissues or blotting paper with you in summer. If you forget then head to the nearest restroom and borrow some toilet paper for a quick blot of excess sebum in your face. Carry a facial mist in your handbag – we love all the ones from Indian Ayurveda and wellness brand Kama – and give your face a quick, refreshing spritz.

Waterbodies

And lastly, it’s important to stay hydrated in summer. Drink at least 12 glasses of water every day. Remember feeling good will always ensure that you look good. Stay out of the direct sun during the day. Invest in a floppy hat with a wide brim and don’t be afraid to wear it! Also, a pair of dark sunglasses is a necessity during the summer, not a luxury so head over to your nearest Sunglass Hut and pick out a fashionable yet functional pair. This means that it’s best to opt for darker lenses so that your eyes don’t water and your make-up stays put.

Shibi, like the song in ‘West Side Story’, is oh so pretty, witty and bright! Modest too, but we can discuss that later. A Chennai native (34) who now dwells in the capital, there is nothing she loves more than a good story. Except for a good handbag. A self-professed shopaholic with impeccable taste, the young women’s rights lawyer and mother was ‘discovered’ by an Indian Express editor in Chennai at a famous boutique eight years ago and she has not looked back since. Fashion writing allows her to combine her two greatest loves and Shibi has been published in The Hindu, the Indian Express, Femina, Scroll, Bodahub, Hi-Blitz Magazine and many more. A militant optimist, Shibi abhors armchair activism and suggests that everyone ‘Be the Change’ instead of complaining about Modiji. Or run for POTUS – anybody seems better qualified than Trump. She also loves animals and has orchestrated many a doggy/kitty rescue; her most fervent hope is to see the status and treatment of both animals and women improve in India and the world over. Also, she requests you to RECYCLE and to REUSE. Climate change is real, people. Jai Hind!
